Transitioning from work to home, when you work at home, can be a challenge.
Many remote workers, especially newly remote workers, experience difficulty creating physical and emotional distance from their jobs at the end of the day.
Rituals can help you close the work portion of your day and move into the personal time. When repeated, those rituals signal the brain and body that it is time to move on. Here are four techniques to consider for your end-of-day ritual:
1. Say goodnight. If you are logged on to Slack or another messaging platform with your team, take a moment to say good night.
2. Turn off your equipment. Carefully shut down all of the applications you’ve been using and power down for the night.
3. Clear your workspace. Remove coffee cups, scraps of paper, and anything else that could be a distraction in the morning. If you work in a part of your home that’s also used for other activities you might even consider closing your office by placing a decorative bed sheet or other covering over the area.
4. Stretch. Before you start on other activities, take a few moments for some deep breathing and relaxing stretches.
